Pirates News · Pirates win prestigious SDSU Tournament; host Green-White game

It was two long days at San Diego State, but the Oceanside High School football team made it worth its while, winning the San Diego State High School Passing Camp.

Quarterback Michael Hardyway connected with Kiki Laie on the last play of the game to defeat St. Augustine, 22-19, in the finals Sunday afternoon.

To reach the finals,  the Pirates defeated La Costa Canyon (17-12) in the semifinals to set up their showdown with Saints. In bracket play earlier on Sunday, Oceanside downed St. Augustine B (35-12), Bakersfield Frontier (30-13) and Orange Lutheran (15-12).

On Saturday, the Pirates were a perfect 3-0 in pool play with wins over Yucaipa (37-12), Cathedral Catholic (26-6) and El Capitan (34-27).

Nearly 1,000 students, families, and friends watched the White defeat Green, 9-6. The Green team scored on a Tyrell Bellmon 65-yard interception return. The White team countered with its own score, when Hardyway connected with Kameron Beachem on a 55-yard scoring strike. The game ended in a 6-6 tie and came down to a field goal shootout.
