The Oceanside High School softball team won its first postseason game in three years with a 5-2 win over Point Loma in the play-in round of the Division III playoffs Tuesday at OHS.
With the win, the Pirates (16-8-1 overall) advance to the next round Thursday at No. 3 Mission Bay (15-6)
The Pirates, who have now won five consecutive games, spotted the Pointers a 2-0 lead before uncorking five runs in the bottom of fourth inning to take control of game. With two outs, outfielders Ashley Tuggle and Samantha Ruiz both singled through the infield, setting up catcher Polynesia Tuise’e (2 for 3, RBI), who singled up the middle scoring Tuggle and cutting Point Loma’s lead to 2-1. Then, center fielder Namie Fuimaono drove in Ruiz and pinch runner Jackie Escobar with a line drive to right center field. Shortstop Samarah Martinez (2-for-4, RBI) capped the inning with a home run that traveled nearly 180 feet over the fence in left field.
Pitcher Julie Ceballos Rivera took over from there tossing a complete game and striking out six. She was helped out on defense with stellar plays by Tuggle and Ruiz in the outfield and Martinez in the infield.
