Oceanside High School’s softball coach Michael Romero was honored last Friday as the San Diego Padres Coach of the Week, presented by Fox Sports San Diego.
For eight weeks, the Padres will honor one local high school baseball or softball Coach of the Week for making a positive impact on the lives of his or her players on and off the field as a coach, mentor, or role model. At the end of the eight-week program, one of the honorees will be named the Padres High School Coach of the Year and receive a $5,000 donation.
“It’s pretty awesome and a reflection of the girls and their hard work on and off the field,” said Romero, who will receive a $1,000 donation to Pirates program. “I was surprised and I wasn’t expecting anything like this at all. I didn’t even know the Padres did such a thing.
“We going to put that money toward our field or new uniforms.”
Currently, the Pirates have a 12-8-1 overall record, doubling their win output from last season and are currently fighting for a top seed in the Division III playoffs.
